MSc Study Program on
Agricultural and Food Economics (AFECO)
Will we be able to feed the world in 2050?
How do farmers handle the economical risks of globalized world markets in times of climate change?
How do producers and processors react to permanently increasing requirements of consumers regarding food safety and sustainability?
How can natural resources be preserved by a competition oriented and sustainable agrifood sector?
Agricultural economics provide answers to these and other questions – in times of a growing global population, increasing land use conflicts changing consumer behaviour and ongoing climate change will demand this type of expertise in the future.
Within the Master study program „Agricultural and Food Economics“ (AFECO) of the University of Bonn you gain the necessary knowledge and skills for awareness, analysis and development of market activities along the value chain from production on farms, via processing and trading, up to the consumption of food. Active learning by participating in research projects is part of our curriculum.
Agricultural Economics at Bonn University has achieved an internationally outstanding position in the field of mathematical modelling and information systems and communication in food chain management. Our students benefit from our international orientation beyond the Master of Science in the 4 semester AFECO study programme: the joint Double Degree Programme („one study programs – two degrees“) with the University of Wageningen/NL or the integration of AFECO-Master into the Erasmus Mundus Master program „ European Master in Agricultural, Food and Environmental Policy Analysis“ offered by 5 well-known european universities as well as the Theodor Brinkmann Graduate School provide excellent opportunities at the highest international standard. These programs prepare for doctoral studies and involve active cooperations with public and private research institutes in the field of agricultural and resource economics.
An international program teaching state-of-the-art tools and skills qualifies for manyfold leadership activities in business,
public administrations and research institutes. Holders of AFECO degree find their employment opportunities in service
companies like insurances and consulting firms, in business companies, in associations, non-profit organisations and public
authorities of the agricultural and food sector, of environmental protection and of development cooperation.
Food industry meanwhile is the fourth ranked and still growing branch of German industry of nearly 6,000
esp. medium-sized companies. In our modern society they offer future and world market oriented jobs.
Since 1847 located at Poppelsdorf Castle we are in the center of a traditional and well-known research campus of the international city of science and of global summits, the City of Bonn. The location next to the river Rhine, surrounded by the hilly areas of the Eifel and the Siebengebirge, in the mid of Europe in short distance to all of the most important metropolitan regions we provide an ideal place for your studies!
