Project Description

Regional determinants of ecological farming

Since several years the change to ecological farming is subsidized. Volume and praxis of subvention do not conform with the supposed issue. An effective subvention efforts the knowledge of determinants and interrelations. At least there is the question about the percentage that has subvention to the expansion of ecological farming. The findings of this study should proof the polocy of subvention.

1. Issue: The dilemma and problems of modern agriculture often are debated. The change to ecological farming is termed as a solution, while the proposals range from 10% (20%) of agricultural land use to complete change of the agriculture. In fact ecological farming reaces only a few parcentages of farming at all. There are great disparities in regional ecological farming.
Of witch kind are the structures behind these regional disparities? Witch determinants can be found out of the development behind? Witch determinants promote the expansion of ecological farming? How is the room for action for the policy – agrarian policy and regional policy- to subsidize ecological farming in an efficient way. And are there at least conclusions (forecasts) for the future development possible?
2. Methods:
From the theories of the conditions of agrarian structure and of regional structure the determination of factors on the expansion of ecological farming should be proofed and estimated. At first these factors have to be termed. The ecological farming is build up by the regional percentages of ecological used land of all agricultural land use. The the determinants are estimated - using multivariate statistical procedures – in their relation to ecological farming. The results can be the basis for futher simulations and forecasts. To get an insight as compete as possible into the determination of ecological farming, an inquiry to all german regions will be done. Such a large studiy can be accomplished by aggregated statistics. The disadvantage of aggregated statistics is the loss in quality, ispecially concerning very specifically situations of every farm. But these specific conditions could only be found out by individual inquerries. There are a few of studies to this theme based on individual inquerries. But these studies are all limited to exquisite regions, whereas never the complete regional determinants of ecological farming can be grasped. This study tries therefore another few to the determinants of ecological farming.
